With the turn on hand, I spent a bit more time on the rules, and incidentally since the neighbour to the South of Hokusei-do seems so very menacing ( ), I looked more into the defensive structures: The blockhouse seems to me to be a great asset, but I was wondering whether the defense bonus provided is really meaningful (+1 DEF)? Looking at relatively weak units such as Archers or Minpei (Militia) who have intrinsic 12 DEF, the +1 DEF feels a bit light to me for a small piece of fortification (I just wish to point out that the relative weakness is on the defense bonus to the unit, not in terms of defence bonus to unit vs. holding). bobsworlds.x10.mx/Zaidan/6_THE_RULES/Actions/Action%20Descriptions/Structures/Blockhouse.htmI would have voted for a stronger bonus (+3/4, i.e. c. +25/33% based on low infantry ranking units). Does it seem to overpower the asset?

The asset is already overpowered. Once built it saves you a net 0.4GB per turn on your unit maintenance. The power is not so much in the +1 DEF but that for lower quality troops you can almost double the number that you have active without increasing your costs. It's also already got a 5 Yr ROI which makes it one the fastest buildings to pay for itself in the rules. Also your southern border would be bloody quite if you keep your vassals on a leash, and preferably muzzled as well

Fair enough, I see indeed the economic benefit for the building. Would it make sense to tone down the maintenance boost and uplift the DEF bonus? In that way it would enhance the unique unit bonus and reduce the embedded support for larger armies? Or am I just splitting a hair into four?

Units in a proper fortification get a nice defense bonus, don't they?

If you consider what a blockhouse actually is, a +1 DEF bonus is reasonable. The main use of a blockhouse was always as a place to garrison some units at a strategic point. Have a look at some photos of a blockhouse and then imagine how many men from a company actually fit inside, those inside probably get a +2/4/6 bonus but most of the unit can't fit (or fight from) inside. Units in a proper fortification get a nice defense bonus, don't they? On the battle map they get a +DEF bonus equal to the level of the fortification they are inside. So that level 6 castle is a +6 DEF bonus.

Tristan has it, also keep in mind that a blockhouse only protects a single unit, while a proper castle or fortification can protect several (depending on level and status)

When I originally used the Blockhouse it was for a battle where one side was holding a bridge, and had two blockhouses one on on each end of the bridge, so that's the sort of thing it was intended for.
