Can Bless the Sacred Holding be used in reaction to a Contest Holding action or is the caster trying to anticipate? It's powerful in the former case - auto fail on the action - but pretty meh in the latter case (2 GB, opportunity cost on preparing something else, and potentially quite a few RP; though, the morale bonus would help offset the GB cost). So, I thought it best to ask!

You know, I really don't know. The text is not that clear. It sort of reads as though it has to be in place already, but the various dispel realm magic spells make it clear that sometimes you can cast realm spells in reaction to counter other spells/actions, so I'm just not sure.
I'm inclined to say you can cast it in reaction to a contest attempt, but am willing to entertain any alternative interpretations.

From RoE2 play it can be used as a reaction but you must be specific about the reaction, i.e. I have a Readied Free Action to Cast Bless the Sacred Holding on Province A if province A is contested is okay, but having 3 separate Readied Free Actions Cast Bless the Sacred Holding on Province A or B or C if province A or B or C is contested is not okay (unless you had somehow memorised 3 Bless the Sacred Holding). The rough guideline is if you could perform all of the actions if they weren't readied then you can ready them all.
The other benefits of the spell are: - giving advantage (or removing advantage from other people) I.E. If I use it on a temple 1 in a province 4 I now have the +2 action benefit rather than the +0. - income (generally it gets you +ve income in larger provinces or places where you have income modifiers (I.E. high prosperity or some arcane realms spells like Gold Rush).

Thanks Tristan. Umm, I take it there should be a "not" in the Province A or B or C example? And you're right, I hadn't thought of the advantage aspect either. Thanks again.

When you think about it, it is a pretty powerful spell for being only 2nd level.

Bless the Sacred Holding is pretty powerful, but Bless the Holy Land is probably the most powerful divine spell though (bang for buck). On a 6th level province with all holdings filled it generally generates a total 6GB increase in income. With the cost to memorise & cast the spell being 2GB + 1GB per province and the ability to have it affect multiple provinces a temple regent can make a lot of friends with regular casting. Also has the side benefit of increasing the prosperity bonus to actions in the province.
Other divine spells that see a lot of use are Conversion (Contest and Rule in one neat package) as well the army buff and healing spells.
In fact if there are divine spell casters who want generic spell advice I played the Celestial Jewel of Sarimie in RoE2 so I have a fair bit of experience with the rules and the spells.

Excellent, that will be a lot of help Tristan, we have a lot of inexperienced players running temple domains, your offer is much appreciated.
