Battle of the Ueda Wan The battle opened when the Combined Abe-Maeda fleet under the command of Hojo Kageshige intercepted the Ikeda fleet making its way down the coast.
The Ikeda sent their light squadron to screen the approaching allied fleet while their heavy squadron continued on course, hoping to envelope the Abe-Maeda fleet’s flank. In the opening exchange of fire, Hojo concentrated his fire on the Ikeda light squadron, sinking three of the four vessels. The Ikeda counter fire damaged several of the combined fleet’s vessels, particularly the Maeda gunkan Haiiro no Same (Gray Shark), but none were lost.
In the second phase, the Ikeda heavy squadron continued on its course and Hojo split his fleet, with the ships on his left surrounding the remaining Ikeda haisen while his right turned to engage the Ikeda heavy squadron. In the exchange of fire the Maeda gunkan Kogane no Koi (Golden Carp) was sunk with all hands, including a unit of marines. Hojo concentrated his fire on the two left-most ships of the Ikeda line and followed that by boarding those two damaged vessels, which, after a brief but fierce engagement, were captured. The remaining two Ikeda Senkan managed to break off the engagement and flee.
Final result: The Abe-Maeda fleet captured two senkan, one very badly damaged and one very badly damaged heisen at the cost of one gunkan sunk and another heavily damaged.
{OOC: My roommate and I played this battle out, he ran the Abe-Maeda fleet and I ran the Ikeda fleet, and yes, he kicked my butt}
