I'm not familiar with that particular set of rules, I'll have to take a look at them. And you are right about the endless numbers of books and supplements. What a fucking pain - and expense! Pathfinder has a fairly exhaustive SRD at www.d20pfsrd.com.

I like 2E better, generally. Less munchkiny. Yeah 2E has a better feel to it. At least I think it does, though 30-odd years playing it might have something to do with that.

I enjoy both 2nd and 3rd though I think 2nd is easier keeping track of if you have a lot of players.

Oh? How so? I mean I agree, but that is because I'm so familiar with 2E that I think in 2E terms for gaming, but I wonder why you think that way.

I have been a DM before and run both editions. 3rd edition I quite like as a player because you have a great amount of flexibility to customise your skills but it is a lot of bookkeeping for the DM because you have to tot up skill points available, class skills, cross class skills, etc. Checking it all especially in pbems when you can have a large number of players can be very time consuming and if the DM has to spend a lot of time doing paperwork the game can lag. Working out when to apply skill synergy can also be a headache at times although the concept itself isn't bad. In tabletop all of these are much less of a problem due to the smaller numbers of players and the speedier nature of communication. Overall though I find second is smoother to operate in terms of character creation and levelling up while still allowing a reasonable amount of flexibility for the players.

I always tend to outsource the book-keeping aspect of 3e to a computer. 3e lends itself more easily to automation in this manner while 2e never did. It may also be because when 2e was around computers where not as prevalent.

That's entirely possible. As far as the automating, well I've been a computer geek for around 25 years, so I have built endless numbers spreadsheets to handle a lot of that stuff for 2E, but nothing for 3E.

As I said, I was planning on letting people use 3E to design their characters (but no prestige classes - I really don't like them at all) because the RoE rules are 3E based, but as was mentioned before the character level stuff doesn't really impact the Domain level stuff that greatly, so does anybody have a preference for using 2E to make the characters?

Considering that 3E has been around since 2000 it's probably easier to use it. It helps if the material is accessible and reasonably familiar. I could probably find my 2E books, but I haven't looked at them since I was a teenager. In the interests of a level field I'd recommend we use 3E (for the little it matters). As for automation, pcgen.sourceforge.net/ has a free character creation/management tool.

D&D, AD&D, 2ed AD&D, DnD 3E + Pathfinder.
I could add 4E I suppose, but I don't really like it.

That seems to be a pretty common assessment of 4E.

Did we ever get to a decision? In a way it doesn't matter......really.
